1. 学术报告:Recent Advances in Understanding Radiation Belt Dynamics

摘要:Earth’s radiation belts are regions of space containing energetic
(MeV) charged particles that are trapped in Earth’s
approximately-dipolar magnetic field. Fluxes of the trapped
relativistic electrons can vary by several orders of magnitude over
time scales of less than a day. Resonant interactions between plasma
waves and the trapped electrons have been proposed to explain the
variations, including interactions with plasma waves near the electron
cyclotron frequency, and interactions with magnetohydrodynamic waves
near the electron (longitudinal) drift frequency. I will describe
computational methods that have been developed to provide increasingly
realistic simulations of these interactions, and present recent
measurements from the NASA Van Allen Probes spacecraft that enable
detailed investigations of radiation belt physics.
