Abstract:
The concept of available potential energy (APE), first promulgated by Margules (1903) and formalized by Lorentz (1955), has far-reaching application in meridional overturning circulation of ocean and dynamical meteorology (e.g., see Bryan and Lewis 1979, Hughes et al. 2009).Although Dutton and Johnson (1967), Wiin-Nielsen and Chen(1993) got some theoretical studies in APE of meteorology and proposed a variational approach that leads to a well-defined mathematical problem, no practical algorithm has ever been proposed (Huang 2005). In this talk, I will demonstrate that the APE of World Ocean with topography is equal to the enthalpy difference between its current physical state and the reference state. And use the concept of enthalpy; we develop a accurate algorithm to calculate APE of world ocean. Furthermore, I will use a 2-D numerical model to show that the nature of APE for a singer column case is due to thermobaric effect. And it is the energy source for convection.
